CURRICULUM

The curriculum focuses on such conditions as asthma, obesity, diabetes and heart disease, which predominantly affect minority families. In addition to encouraging children to have healthy lifestyles and thereby minimize the probability that they will develop these conditions or suffer the worst consequences of them, the curriculum promotes development of scientific inquiry and problem-solving skills and specifically teaches about careers in healthcare and biomedical research. It includes eight instructional units designed for 4th and 5th grade students.

Each of these instructional units contains:

  • Five one-hour lessons
  • Two guest speakers who are patients, healthcare workers or researchers
  • Experiments
  • Hands-on activities
  • Live demonstrations
  • Games
